Our new minister will be a worship leader demonstrating deep knowledge of the Bible and the love of Jesus with the ability to preach inspiring sermons and offer meaningful worship experiences. The minister will officiate weddings, baptisms, and memorial services. The called minister will value HMPC tradition and history and nurture members’ spiritual development and personal faith. We seek a minister who will work with the Christian Education Committee to guide our Christian Education program focused on increasing participation in Sunday School and recommend materials and areas of study that will excite our congregation.
The called minister will moderate the Session and provide guidance and oversight to committees in support of the operations and activities of the church including evaluating our current and future needs and identifying areas of improvement. Our minister will encourage generous giving while being a good steward of all the Lord provides.
Our church is in the beautiful historic town of Tarboro, North Carolina and our congregation is approximately 300 members. Located in eastern North Carolina, Tarboro has a population of approximately 12,000 residents. Tarboro, chartered in 1760, and HMPC, founded in 1874, have both carefully preserved their history while embracing contemporary growth allowing our community to honor its tradition as it nurtures a congregation to serve God today. HMPC is located in downtown Tarboro among many notable features listed on the National Register of Historic Places within a 45-block Historic District which includes one of two remaining original colonial town commons in the country, the other being in Boston, MA. We are a vibrant arts, travel, food, sports, service and social loving community.
Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church has a long history of mentoring and developing exceptional ministers who have grown amongst our loving and nurturing congregation and gone on to become outstanding leaders in our denomination. Our last two ministers, Christopher Edmonston (now at White Memorial, Raleigh, NC) and Benjamin Kane (now at 2nd Presbyterian, Little Rock, AR) are the latest examples. We understand the challenges a new pastor may face when uprooting from a current position and our congregation is committed to supporting our next pastor as they grow into the role God calls for them at HMPC. In addition to day-to-day encouragement, HMPC is blessed to be able to support its next Head of Staff / Senior Pastor in the following ways:
