Central Presbyterian Church—a 516-member congregation affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA), founded in 1848 and located in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa—is seeking an interim pastor.

Qualifications

• Master of Divinity degree
• Ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA), or a denomination in full communion with the PCUSA (UCC, ELCA, or RCA). Ministers in other denominations may apply, but would need Presbytery approval. • 10 years pastoral experience
• Training in interim or transitional ministry preferred

Job Information

• Full-time
• Annual salary: $90,000-100,000 (including housing allowance)
• Benefits include health insurance and retirement through PCUSA Board of Pensions
• 5 weeks vacation, and 2 weeks study leave
• Beginning in May 2024, or as soon as possible, with the starting date negotiable.
*Due to the nature of an interim pastorate, the tenure of the position may cease with an appropriate notice of no less than 30 days with the hiring of a permanent pastor.

Primary Responsibilities

• Worship: Plan and lead worship services, preach approximately 45 times a year, administer sacraments of baptism and communion, collaborate with music staff in planning worship, staff Worship Committee
• Pastoral Care: Visit with members who are ill, grieving, hospitalized, homebound, or in need of pastoral care, lead weddings and funerals, staff Board of Deacons

• Education: Coordinate weekly Adult Forum program, collaborate in organizing monthly Community Conversations series and annual Wade speaker series, support and chaperone youth group activities
• Mission: Attend Presbytery meetings, maintain relationships with mission partners, represent church in the community, staff World & Community Concerns Committee
• Membership: Connect with visitors, organize and lead new member programs, help to integrate newcomers into the life of the congregation
• Communication: Supply content for monthly newsletter, weekly e-mail blast, and social media posts
• Administration: Moderate monthly meetings of Session and annual meetings of congregation, help compile annual reports, staff Nominating Committee
• Human Resources: Oversee staff of 12 paid employees (3 FT, 9 PT), lead weekly staff meetings, provide feedback on job performance, lead hiring process for new staff, staff Human Resources Committee
• Finance: help plan annual stewardship effort and compile budget, oversee church financial management, staff Business & Finance and Stewardship Committees and Foundation Board
