Currie Family Lecture

January 11, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Just as Union Theological Seminary (now Union Presbyterian Seminary) moved from rural Hampden-Sydney, Virginia to urban Richmond more than 120 years ago, the seminary’s Charlotte campus represents but one point on the historical continuum of Union’s innovative approach to Theological education. For over a century Union has been a leader in using the latest technology, advocating for Christian Education and Clinical Pastoral Education, and pushing for a more inclusive student body. By building a campus in Charlotte, Union Presbyterian Seminary has expanded the reach of a recognized seminary with a curriculum based on the Reformed Tradition. Join us for this year’s Currie Family Lecture as Union alumnus, seminary historian, and retired PC(USA) minister William B. Sweetser Jr. considers the role that the Charlotte campus has in the history of Union Presbyterian Seminary and its role in the future of the church. Among his many accomplishments, Sweetser is the author of the seminary’s official history, “A Copious Fountain: A History of Union Presbyterian Seminary, 1812-2012.” Free, but registration is required.

Begun through a gift to Union Presbyterian Seminary by Thomas Currie Jr. and delivered annually through the Seminary’s Charlotte campus, the Currie Family Lecture is a regular series in which lectures are presented on the history and mission of the church. Given Currie’s vocational interest in the connection between the church’s historical work and its present mission, the lecture series seeks to explore that link, examining how the past might inform our present and direct us toward a faithful future. The Currie Family Lecture is expanding into the Currie Family Professorship.
