The Word of History

By Rev. Dr. Audrey Todd (Union PSCE, M.Div., M.A.C.E ’10)

Life has a toll.

Life on edge.

Living with hypersensitivity.

Living life under suspicion.

One’s humanity never affirmed.

Always having to prove oneself.

Living life with one’s hands up to prove one’s innocence.

Trauma to the soul.

Living small so as not to offend.

Living as though one needs permission.

Living life in the shadows.

Living life from behind.

Hustling hard to catch up, to keep up, to get ahead.

To be who we were created to be.

Then one day.

The word of history found us.

Our ancestors stole away, fought hard, studied, achieved, made ways.

The word of history found us.

We met our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Made in His image, we became new.

We have a new attitude!

We love.

Amid degradation.

Through subjugation.

Despite unrelenting hatred.

Rigged systems.

Badged intimidators.

The word of history found us.

We are overcomers!

Transformed, resurrected, becoming.

We are more than conquerors!

We say no to a world of hate, to superiority!

We bear the image of God!

The word of history has found us.

We walk united.

We pursue justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.

We will not rest until the kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever!
