Internship Basics

In a rapidly changing religious landscape, we encourage students to engage in a learning context of their own choosing. Students will explore and deepen their vocational identity through contextual immersion as their experiences become texts embedded in their contexts through the practicum-based and project-based learning courses. These courses will provide students of all basic master’s degree opportunities to nurture and engage in theological reflection and integration processes in their chosen contextual settings.

Supervised Ministry Course Offerings

SMPR 100 – Practicum-Based Learning in Context
This course will provide participants with an opportunity to engage in a site-based practicum. Contextual immersion will enable participants of all master’s degrees to deepen their vocational call through various theological reflection frameworks. Participants will integrate experiences with peer reflection, cultivate ministerial identity, and form practical wisdom in ministry. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

SMPR 200 – Project-Based Learning in Context
This course will provide participants with an opportunity to engage in a context through practice of planning, implementing, and evaluating a ministry project that addresses the needs of a specific site and supports student’s desire to deepen their ministerial leadership. Participants will engage in peer reflection as they develop a project, cultivate a critical framework and foster their vocational path in ministry. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

Student Advising Guidelines

• Students can take courses at their convenience. They can start an internship throughout the year including the summer term.
• All students will be able to engage in class for peer reflection and course requirements. Academic credit will be awarded at the end of the term for which the student is registered.
• Students may choose a different placement site for each course or remain at the same site for both courses.
• Students may fulfill the requirements of their denomination.
• Our curriculum’s primary focus is vocational formation. Students are encouraged to participate in the initial consultation with the instructor.

• Year 2 or 3: Project-Based Learning in Context

Registration

1. Submit your request form to your instructor. And ask your supervisor to submit the site application.
2. All forms require your instructor’s approval prior to registration. 
3. Register in SONIS.
