John T. Carroll is Harriet Robertson Fitts Memorial Professor of New Testament at Union Presbyterian Seminary. He was called to the seminary’s faculty in 1992.
An M.Div. graduate of Princeton Seminary in 1979, Carroll received a B.A. from the University of Tulsa and a Diploma in Theology from Oxford University. Upon graduation from Princeton Seminary, he served as associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Dearborn, Michigan (1979–1982). After completing the Ph.D. in New Testament at Princeton Seminary (1986), he taught religious studies at Louisiana State University. While at LSU, he served for two years as interim pastor of a small church in the Baton Rouge area. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia, the College of William and Mary, and Randolph-Macon College.

Professor Carroll is a founding member of the New Testament Library Editorial Board. He served for five years as co-chair of the Gospel of Luke Section for the Society of Biblical Literature and continues as a member of its steering committee.

Professor Carroll is married to Dr. Maria Ramos, an English professor at Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia. Their son, Oscar James (twelve years of age), is an avid baseball player. He also has two adult children, Andrew and Anna. A semi-professional musician, he is principal trombonist and president of the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, and also principal trombonist of the Richmond Brass Consort.
