In addition to a Master of Divinity from Union Presbyterian Seminary and a Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, Nelson earned his doctorate in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia in 2017, with a focus on Christian ethics in regard to economics, human flourishing and ecology. He is also a Chartered SRI Counselor (CSRIC®). An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Nelson has been actively involved with a number of community organizations including RVA Rapid Transit, Shalom Farms, Maggie Walker Community Land Trust, Virginia Community Voice, Thriving Cities Group, Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, STEP Richmond, Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, and Grace Covenant Child Development Center. In 2018, Nelson received the Servant Leader Award from Leadership Metro Richmond. He resides in Richmond with his two sons, Eason and Asher.
