“Search, and you will find . . . ”

Those ancient words seem particularly appropriate in the information age and space of the internet. If you are here, you are searching for direction about theological education and the seminaries that aspire to deliver it. I am delighted that your search has brought you to the website of Union Presbyterian Seminary.

It is my hope that you will find on this site the information you seek about our school and the manner in which we prepare students for ministry. It is also my hope that for the next few minutes, or perhaps even hours, that you will find yourself electronically at home. Let me welcome you to wander through the cyberspace corridors that will enable your virtual tour through our campus, introduce you to the people who teach and work here, and acquaint you with the various educational, mission, and ministry programs that thrive here. Were you to make an actual visit to our campus, no doubt you would want to make your way quickly into our classrooms and our library. The library and faculty are the great pride and joy of any educational institution. This website allows us to introduce you to both.

Feel free to acquaint yourself with the academic backgrounds, vocational interests, courses taught, and books written by our faculty. Once you read their materials, you will find that you want to meet them. You will find yourself intrigued about sitting in their classrooms, absorbing their cutting edge theological, biblical, historical, and practical insights, and engaging them and your classroom colleagues in spirited debate. Picture yourself in our library with the virtual aids that are available. Browse our catalog. Acquaint yourself with our staff. Imagine yourself walking through the stacks, the smell of books, old and new, wafting through the air, inviting you into the worlds of Augustine, Calvin, Luther, Barth, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Paul. I hope that once you have been able to visualize the space in your mind through the help of this site that you’ll want to come for a physical visit where you can sit in a class, speak to faculty and students, and pace the stacks for real.

As you move through this site, you will find yourself electronically immersed in almost every facet of our school. Learn about our two campuses at Richmond and Charlotte. Whether you are interested in a more traditional educational experience where you move into a residential community and immerse yourself in study full time, or need, because of family, work, or other logistical commitments, an educational environment that is more flexible and adaptive, we are able to provide an engaging context for your studies. There are students to meet, administrators and staff who introduce themselves and the work of their particular offices, and information that will tell you how you can contact us.

Our academic catalogue will give you the most up to date information about our many degree programs and the courses offered in each. Articles on the school’s background will acquaint you with the rich history of service to the church that Union has provided across the years. A brief look at the academic calendar will let you take our communal pulse. If you are concerned about financial aid, the quest for answers begins right here. Our news and publications section will bring you up to date about our current events and celebrations. And in our support section, you can learn about the recent conclusion of our “One in Mission” campaign which raised more than $56 million, a figure that represents 112% of our $50 million goal.

The overwhelming success of this campaign is an indication that our alumni/ae, the churches our graduates serve, and the friends who partner with us through their contributions are excited about the future of theological education, and especially about the role Union Presbyterian Seminary can and will play in that future through its nurture of candidates for the ministry just like you. You can be a part of that future. The journey begins right here. Search . . . find yourself at home.
