Union Presbyterian Seminary will open a new bookstore as it takes over the campus bookstore location from Cokesbury, the retail division of United Methodist Publishing House. The store will open to the public on Wednesday, April 24th at 12 pm. There will be a grand opening sale May 2-4, including a reception and book signing event on May 2, in Belk Center - adjacent to the bookstore - on the Richmond campus, from 4:00-6:00 pm. The 2013 Sprunt lecturer E. Brooks Holifield, professor emeritus of the Chandler School of Theology, as well as members of the UPSem faculty, will be featured.

Union Presbyterian Seminary hosts dialogue on the future of theological education, September 26-27 on the Richmond campus.

Alums, students, faculty, staff, and students of Union Presbyterian Seminary gathered at Queens University on Saturday, July 21st one final time to celebrate not an end but a beginning. In September when UPSem, Charlotte campus resumes classes, it will be in the new state-of-the-art facility on the grounds of Sharon Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC.

The Rev. John B. Trotti, who served as librarian at Union Presbyterian Seminary for 34 years, received the Award for Excellence in Theological Education at the 220th General Assembly on Thursday (July 5).

The Rev. Laura Mendenhall (M.A. '71) is the recipient of the 2012 Ernest Trice Thompson Award. She received the award at the Presbyterian Outlook luncheon that was held as part of the 220th General Assembly (2012) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

It is with great sadness yet deep appreciation for her life, that Union Presbyterian Seminary remembers Bishop Leontine T.C. Kelly who passed away June 28, in Oakland, California at age 92.  The Black Alumni/ae Association of Union Presbyterian Seminary honored Bishop Kelly at the Trailblazers award banquet held on February 15, 2012, as part of the “Ministry on the Ground” conference and UPSem Bicentennial.  Bishop Kelly was appreciative of her recognition as a “Trailblazer” and, as President Blount has said, the “enduring affection” of Union Presbyterian Seminary.
 

Union Presbyterian Seminary celebrated its 200th graduating class with ceremonies on both Charlotte, NC, and Richmond, VA, campuses.

For the first time in Union Presbyterian Seminary’s history, an honorary degree will be bestowed. Dr. Yeon Ok Lee (M.A.'64), whose accomplishments are too numerous to name, will be the recipient of a Doctor of Humane Letters to be awarded at the seminary’s bicentennial graduation in June.

Hybrid courses will be taught beginning this fall at Union Presbyterian Seminary. A combination of online and intense on-campus classroom learning will be offered to a limited number of alumni/ae and qualifying prospective students or interested lay leaders in the church.

Syngman Rhee, special assistant to the president for global ministry and advancement, received an honorary doctorate of divinity from the Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary in Seoul, Korea during their Founders' Day celebration on May 8.

    Union Presbyterian Seminary honored six Presbyterian congregations for their innovative service in Christian education, outreach, and social concern with the annual Congregational Leadership Awards. Since 1991, 94 churches in 28 states have received Union Presbyterian Seminary Congregational Leadership Awards.

Former Board of Trustee MemberWilliam Willis (Bill) Berry passed away on April 4, 2012. He was 79.

The Academy of Parish Clergy selected the 2011 Top Ten Books for Parish Ministry. Included was Worship Matters: A Study for Congregations by Jane Rogers Vann, Professor Emerita of Christian Education at Union Presbyterian Seminary.

Historic "Seminary Sunday" unfolds at the Greater Richmond Convention Center on April 22 as Union Presbyterian Seminary invites the community to share in the celebration of the seminary's Bicentennial and the global Church in partnership together.

University Senate of the United Methodist Church approves partnership among Wesley Theological Seminary, Pfeiffer University, and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte to expand seminary options for master of divinity candidates.

Union Presbyterian Seminary will be recognized by the State of Virginia General Assembly for 200 years of service to the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Church at large.

Representatives from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association of Theological Schools will be visiting the Seminary

Sam Roberts, the Anne Borden and E. Hervey Evans Professor of Theology and Ethics, will be delivering one of the Banner Lectures at the Virginia Historical Society on February 23 at noon.  "Reflections on the Reverend John Jasper in His Bicentennial Year" will explore the context in which audiences of his time heard him, as well as of our time.

Union Presbyterian Seminary trailblazing alums will be honored at a banquet hosted by the Black Alumni/ae Association on February 15 at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Syngman Rhee will be serving as special assistant to the president for global ministry and advancement focusing on the seminary's work with Asian and Asian American churches, both in the United States and Korea.

Dr. Sung Hee Chang joins the seminary as director of the Asian American Ministry Center and assistant professor of Christian education.

Professor Emeritus of Bibliography John Trotti will receive the Excellence in Theological Education Award given by the PC(USA) committee on theological education.
