Professor Cannon Honored as Sankofa Scholar

Katie Geneva Cannon, Annie Scales Rogers Professor of Christian Ethics, was named the inaugural Sankofa Scholar in Black Church Studies at Candler School of Theology, serving as visiting distinguished faculty at Emory University.

The purpose of the Sankofa Scholar Program is to provide an opportunity for Candler School of Theology students and faculty to engage in intensive study of interdisciplinary local, national, and global issues pertinent to historical and contemporary Black religiosity.

The first African-American woman ordained in the United Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Cannon focuses her work in the areas of Christian ethics, Womanist theology, and women in religion and society. She has lectured nationally on theological and ethical topics and is the author or editor of numerous articles and seven books including Katie's Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community and Black Womanist Ethics. As the Sankofa Scholar, she taught "Code of Ethics in Freedom Narratives" from January 2-7, 2014.
