Black Alumni/ae Association

History

The Union Presbyterian Seminary Black Alumni/ae Association (BAA) was established in 2009 to honor the contributions made by students of African descent to the seminary.  Officers were elected and installed at a covenanting ceremony on February 20, 2013, marking the official establishment of the Black Alumni/ae Association.

In 2012, the Black Alumni/ae Association held the first Trailblazers Banquet, to honor Union's outstanding alumni/ae of African descent.  The 2012 honorees were Dr. Allix B. James (Th.M.'49; Th.D.'57), Bishop Leontine T.C. Kelly (M.Div.'76), and Dr. Gloria Taylor (M.A.'78; Ed.D.'95).

The 2013 Trailblazers Banquet honored Chaplain Colonel Albert Abraham Lincoln Hockaday (M.A.'80), Dr. Edwin D. McCreary, Jr. (Th.M.'45; Th.D.'51), and Rev. Paula Owens Parker (M.Div.'94).

On February 20, 2013, the Black Alumni/ae Association led the 2013 BAA Chapel Service on the Richmond campus.

The 2014 Trailblazers Banquet was held at C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC.  Honorees were:  Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown (M.Div.'08), Trailblazer Award; Rev. Veronica Cannon (M.Div.'06) and Ms. Brenda Foster (M.A.C.E.'06), Genesis Award; Dr. Katie Geneva Cannon, Vanguard Professorship Award; and Dr. Samuel K. Roberts, Faithful Servant Award. 

 

2015 Trailblazers Award Ceremony and Banquet

Join us as we celebrate our 2015 Trailblazers:  Rev. Dr. A. Elaine Crawford (Ph.D.'99), Dr. Angela S. Duncan (M.Div.'03), and Rev. Jonyrma R. Singleton (M.Div.'88).  Banquet tickets are $35/person and available by online registration through February 8, 2015.  A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $45/person.  For more information, contact Laura Lindsay in the alumni/ae office.

On February 18, 2015, the Black Alumni/ae Assocation will hold their annual meeting at 10:00 a.m. in the Thompson Room, Early Center, Richmond Campus.  You are invited to join the UPSem community for worship, led by the BAA, at 11:45 a.m. in Watts Chapel, Watts Hall, Richmond Campus.
